If you’re in the LA area and are looking for a night of good food, good conversation, and of course good coffee, then you should check out the Los Angelenos del Café dinners being hosted by former SCAA president and all around great guy, Tim Castle.
Tim Castle, of Castle & Co, is a man who knows his coffee. He is a former president of the SCAA, one of the founding members of the Roasters Guild, owns his own Specialty Coffee importing business in Los Angeles, and he and his wife Joan (herself an accomplished culinary professional) co-authored The Perfect Cup which is in fact available for purchase in the SCAA store. There’s no questioning that Tim could passionately talk to you for hours about specialty coffee, and that is just what he wants to do.
Tim is inviting coffee enthusiasts around LA to join him monthly for what he’s dubbed the Los Angelenos del Café meetings. The intent is to have these meetings once a month over dinner and wine and discuss a topic of interest in coffee. SCAA staffers Mansi, Adra, and Maria recently had the pleasure of attending one of these delightful dinners and have nothing but great things to say about their experiences.
Food, wine, quality company and good coffee talk, can you think of a better way to spend your night?
The rousing topic of the last Los Angelenos del Café meeting, held on September 1st, was the distinction between and credibility of “good and bad” baristas. SCAA Membership Management Manager, Mansi Chokshi, describes the experience as “interesting conversations, [with] lots of different experiences shared, even from as far as Italy as one of the attendees was a barista in Italy. The need for a standard for coffee drinks was prevalent, in my opinion and something SCAA can work on to aid these troubles our retailers are going through.” Overall it seems like you wouldn’t be short of good conversation if you attended one of these dinners.

The event is hosted at the Castle & Co. headquarters in Los Angeles. Attendees are asked to chip in $35 to cover the costs of the food and wine. The event is open to all, but the hosts are asking for timely RSVPs so that food may be prepared appropriately.
