Los Angelenos del Café Meetings Bring Great Coffee Talk to LA

If you’re in the LA area and are looking for a night of good food, good conversation, and of course good coffee, then you should check out the Los Angelenos del Café dinners being hosted by former SCAA president and all around great guy, Tim Castle.

Tim Castle, of Castle & Co, is a man who knows his coffee. He is a former president of the SCAA, one of the founding members of the Roasters Guild, owns his own Specialty Coffee importing business in Los Angeles, and he and his wife Joan (herself an accomplished culinary professional) co-authored The Perfect Cup which is in fact available for purchase in the SCAA store. There’s no questioning that Tim could passionately talk to you for hours about specialty coffee, and that is just what he wants to do.

Tim is inviting coffee enthusiasts around LA to join him monthly for what he’s dubbed the Los Angelenos del Café meetings. The intent is to have these meetings once a month over dinner and wine and discuss a topic of interest in coffee. SCAA staffers Mansi, Adra, and Maria recently had the pleasure of attending one of these delightful dinners and have nothing but great things to say about their experiences.

Food, wine, quality company and good coffee talk, can you think of a better way to spend your night?

The rousing topic of the last Los Angelenos del Café meeting, held on September 1st, was the distinction between and credibility of “good and bad” baristas. SCAA Membership Management Manager, Mansi Chokshi, describes the experience as “interesting conversations, [with] lots of different experiences shared, even from as far as Italy as one of the attendees was a barista in Italy. The need for a standard for coffee drinks was prevalent, in my opinion and something SCAA can work on to aid these troubles our retailers are going through.” Overall it seems like you wouldn’t be short of good conversation if you attended one of these dinners.

SCAA Membership Management Manager, Mansi Chokshi, spent her night talking shop with other coffee enthusiasts.
On the culinary side of things, guests were treated to a veritable smorgasbord as they discussed their topics. Mansi gave us the mouthwatering menu of “chips and ‘internet’ cheese dip, hot dogs (really flavorful varieties), Jamaican jerk beans, coleslaw, corn with rosemary and butter, and homemade dill pickles. There was also sweet watermelon and crackerjacks for dessert- a unique but surprisingly great combo dessert and gelato from one of the attendees. The wine selection was also extremely sweet and yummy Rieslings that went perfect with the spicy hotdogs everyone enjoyed.” Have we whet your appetite yet?

If you are in the Los Angeles area and want a night to talk uninhibitedly with other coffee enthusiasts, then the Los Angelenos del Café meetings are definitely worth checking out. We hope to see you there and to hear about your experiences afterward!!

The event is hosted at the Castle & Co. headquarters in Los Angeles. Attendees are asked to chip in $35 to cover the costs of the food and wine. The event is open to all, but the hosts are asking for timely RSVPs so that food may be prepared appropriately.

Tim Castle here: Thanks so much, Mansi for the great review! And thanks to my wife Joan Nielsen for providing the food, to Alex Russan and Dana Menkus here for their behind-the-scenes work and to all the participants for their great input! Everyone's engagement made it a great event. We are going forward as a private (i.e. not open to the public) Trade group of local coffee folks that want to further define and refine the local coffee culture. We started out with a small group of friends but we're already growing. We all chip in to defray the costs, as Mansi said, and the food and beverages are provided and shared independently (we're not a restaurant!). Also, while Mansi was writing her post, we set up a domain for AnegelenosDelCafe and the email address is: HQ@AngelenosDelCafe.com if anyone would like to get in touch with us/me specifically with regard to Los Agelenos del Café.

I will also be replying to those of you who've written to me in response to the post above over the next couple of days…it's really gratifying to have had such great response! And thanks again to the early adopters of Los Angelenos Del Café!
