The World Barista Championship Comes to Bogota, Colombia

Have you been keeping up with the World Barista Championship? The competition is put on by World Coffee Events, jointly founded by the Specialty Coffee Association of America and the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe, and draws the best of the best baristas from all over the world.

The talented baristas from over fifty nations each have their shot at proving to a panel of forty-two Certified World Barista Championship Judges from around the world that they deserve the title of World Barista Champion. Over the course of the four day competition each barista will prepare 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 original signature drinks to exacting standards in a 15-minute performance set to music as they compete for the world title. All the while, the competitors exemplify professionalism in coffee, foster learning and business relationships among the coffee community, and help introduce coffee drinkers to exceptional product and preparation. As Managing Director of World Coffee Events, Cynthia Chang, puts it, “This event is so much more than a competition, it represents the passion of an industry dedicated to great coffee, a sustainable supply chain, and the desire to continually delight customers.”

There are many new and exciting things going on at this year’s WBC. For the first time ever the competition is coming to Colombia, the largest producing country of washed mild Arabica coffee. The competitors will have the chance to tour coffee farms in Armenia, one of the centers of Colombian coffee production, and visit the National Coffee Park. Those attending the competition will not be left wanting more. In addition to the show of barista skill and artistry, they will also get to enjoy World Barista Championship espresso bar and brew bars featuring Cup of Excellence coffees from Colombian farms.
