Roasters Guild Coffees of the Year (COTY) is a competition designed to recognize exceptional coffees from around the world. Winning coffees will be recognized at the farmer or producer group level (if multiple farmers contribute to the submission). Awards will be presented to designated representatives on behalf of the producer(s).
The 10 winners of this competition will be showcased in the Coffees of the Year Competition area in the Activities Hall. Elegantly set in a café like atmosphere, the COTY competition welcomes attendees to sample the world’s best coffees alongside the producers whose skill and dedication is unmatched in the industry.
Samples will be evaluated and winners determined prior to SCAA’s 24th Annual Exposition, The Event by grading teams comprised of Licensed SCAA/CQI Q Graders.
Evaluation of submissions will follow procedures according to SCAA Standards & Protocols and a coffee must pass SCAA green grading requirements, as outlined here, to move on to the cupping round. Coffees will be cupped and scored based on SCAA protocols for cupping coffee, then given a final accumulated score. Results of the top 10 coffees will remain confidential until they are announced immediately prior to The Event.
Roasters, importers, exporters and farmers may nominate coffees for submission. Although roasters, exporters or importers may assist with the application process, pay submission fees, and/or facilitate sample shipment, they will not receive awards for their nominations or logistical assistance. This award will be presented to the producer or producer group only.
We’ve made some exciting changes to the COTY program this year, so be sure to visit the COTY area in the Activities Hall at The Event. We encourage attendees to enjoy and celebrate the 10 coffees that earned this title of being among the Roasters Guild Coffees of the Year for 2011-2012. Please note that there will be no on-site voting for this competition at The Event in April.
