How long have you been volunteering for the SCAA?
5 years.
What was the first SCAA event you volunteered for and what were your duties?
It was a Skill Building Workshop in Atlanta, I was a Station Instructor at an espresso lab.
What is your current volunteer roll and what are your other duties in Portland 2012?
I just resigned as Chair of the Barista Guild in December, and before that was very active within the Barista Guild both as a Chapter Rep, and on the Executive Council. Prior to that, I was on the Training Committee/Espresso, and over the years I’ve been a lead instructor and station instructor for many labs both in coffee and espresso. In Portland, I will be Lead Instructor for one lab, and will be volunteering in other areas around the Expo as needed.
Describe your most memorable volunteering experience so far?
All of them. Each time you get to see people really appreciate and value your knowledge and willingness to share, it pushes you to continue to give back in this way.
How has volunteering for the SCAA influenced your coffee career?
In my career, I’ve benefitted greatly by many people who have invested in me, who have mentored me, who have taught me along the way, and I feel a debt of gratitude to pay it back for volunteering through the SCAA. Volunteering for the SCAA has reminded me how special our industry is, as well as how much I don’t know but want to know about coffee.
