How long have you been volunteering for the SCAA?
What was the first SCAA event you volunteered for and what were your duties?
Jeez, I can’t remember but I think it was 2003 and I was a table lead for the Defect Cupping class.
What is your current volunteer role and what are your other duties in Portland 2012?
This year I will be very busy with the Roasters Guild and helping out for various events that will be there; COTY and Roasters Choice, namely.
Describe your most memorable volunteering experience so far?
For me, the best volunteer experience has been and will most likely always be connected to Roasters Guild retreat. For the past few years I have been lucky enough to help roast all of the samples for the Roast Competition for Retreat. That brings back lots of special memories at Sugar Lake Lodge in the parking lot roasting coffees and watching as members poured in for the event. So, by default I guess I kind of felt like I was on the welcoming committee each year. Really fun times. Also serving on the Executive Council for Roasters Guild has been a really great experience too. I guess I have more than one!
How has volunteering for the SCAA influenced your coffee career?
Teaching others to identify quality, understanding what defects are and to share in that with my industry peers has given me a lot of keen insight as to what motivates people to learn and further their coffees careers.
