Who are you and what do you do in coffee?
My name is Arnulfo Leguizamo. I am trying to be the best coffee grower and to produce the best coffee in Colombia.
How and when did you get started in the coffee business?
I became a coffee grower early in my youth. My father was a coffee farmer in the municipality of Teruel, Huila. I began by planting half a hectare on my father’s property.
What jobs have you held in the industry?
I started as picker, and then started planting coffee until we obtained our current farm. I’ve worked in growing, trading, and milling.
What people and/or things inspire you, coffee-wise?
I am inspired by my family and my farm.
What would you like to see change in the industry?
In order to create a sustainable industry, a price reduction of the inputs required to produce coffee is necessary, and the internal price of the coffee must improve as well.
If you were to come back in another life as a drink, what drink would you be?
I would like to be like a coffee drink created from coffee grown on my farm.
What do you consider to be your greatest contribution to coffee?
Producing coffee of high quality and utilizing the best production practices in the process. We are also honored to have won the Cup of Excellence in 2011. For 10 years, we tried to get to the Cup of Excellence. Each time I learned something about the process and improved. Now, I produce one of the top coffees in Colombia.
What do you think others would say is your greatest contribution to coffee?
The way I process my coffee and our production techniques. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others so that they can learn how to grow high-quality coffee.
What’s next for you?
I am constantly learning more about the coffee industry and am working to renew my coffee trees.
Has coffee affected your “non-coffee” life? If so, in what ways?
Coffee is my livelihood. Although we have been blessed with success in competitions and great interest from coffee buyers, I have been restricted by the lack of economic resources.
